Voglers Heros Journey (Pre production Research)

In relation to our main task this will help us allocate a clear and concise structure to our film which will then
allow us to know what to put in our title sequence. The understanding of the hero and the various problems he
faces in his journey shouldn't be applied in our main title sequence yet the use of enigmas should be used to
grasp the audience's attention in wondering what is this journey.

Todorovs narrative structure

How will all this title sequence research help me with my main task?

In depth film opening sequence- The talented Mr Ripley

The last film opening I decided to analyse was called "The Talented Mr Ripley"by Anthony Minghella, the film features Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. Unlike the other film openings this opening lasted 10 minutes which is rather long for a film opening. Despite the length in the opening it was still able to convey information about characters, plot, genre and also establish some enigmas.

At the beginning of the opening the use of editing immediately tells us information about the protaganist of the film. The character's face is revealed through the transaction of multi split screen cut off. The various splits in screen symbolises to the audience that Ripley has a multi personality/ schizophrenic and multi talent characteristic. Accompanying this editing is the sound of a woman singing over a high pitched and rather dramatic instrumental she uses the words "silence" and "night" this words connote darkness and death, this prepares the audience for drama, hence reinforcing its genre as a drama. Linking in to sound the use of diagetic/ voice over is used to give further information about "Ripley" he says, " If I could rub everthing out, starting from myself, starting from borrowing a jacket." This tells the audience that the protaganist goes through a harsh time in the movie involving himself and a jacket, also adds the enigma, what was so bad that it made him want to erase his life?We also told that Dicky Green Leaf is spoilt, we see this when his father says, " spending his allowance is his only talent," this shows that Dicky is very dependant on money.
Camera and mis en scene is also used to show further development of the character "Ripley." Theres medium shot of Ripley in the toilet brushing the jackets of rich men this shows that he doesn't work a very well paid or prestigous job this tells us he is poor. Furthermore there is a long shot of Ripley playing the piano this shows that despite his poor background he is still able to play musical instruments this shows he is intelligent and determined. The use of the first class ticket illustrates how rich the Greenleaf family are in the film.
The audience also question what will happen in the film after the enigmas are established. We question who is Dicky Greenleaf? Will he come back to America?
On the whole the film openings are very successful in ilustrating and symbolising future events in the film .

preliminary Task

Oscar

Trouble shooting list for Preliminary Task

We had a various number of problems which we premeditated before the shooting period. First of all one of our group members didn't have a mobile phone so communication wasn't a 100% therefore when meeting up it would be difficult to locate where one is. However to counteract this we had a specific set time and place for meeting and we also had the team members home number. We also thought that there would be a problem if we didn't have the car because part of the scene was going to be taken in the car, if this occurred one of out team members had a back up car we could of used just in case. The fake blood was another problem if this didn't look real this would definitely hinder our scene. These were the only premeditated problems but having thought of them before shooting we were confident that we would be able to counteract them.

Preliminary Task Job allocations

Having had the plot planned out by our group we were ready to prepare for shooting. First of we had to have our job allocations set out.
The props we needed was a baseball bat, fake blood, money and a car. Each member of the group had to contribute to the props. Zeba had to draw out the story board, I had to write out the script and Arvinder had to take care of the camera. The car was already booked with one of Zeba's friends so our main prop wasn't too worry about. However we did have some worries which will be explained in the trouble shooting list.

Planning for Preliminary Task

Planning for Preliminary Task

Our first step was to plan what genre were going to use and why. I will be showing this planning process through the online application Bubbl.us

Preliminary Task

We have been put in groups of three to complete a specified preliminary task which should teach us as media students the specific requirements needed to make a successful scene.
Our task is to create a minute and a half scene of a conversation between two people. My group consists of Zeba, Arvinder and myself. I will be taking you through the weeks worth of planning made for this task.

Introduction to blog

Hi my name is Oscar. I will be taking you through the development process of my groups creation of a two minute film opening. You will see our base concepts grow in to a final piece which me and my group will be proud of. We have a number of preliminary and research tasks used to develop our understanding of film openings and the conventions required for a successful film opening.
